If you recently acquired this e-mail address, chances are someone else had it before you and the spam load is why they abandoned it. > I even put a false address in for my web browser as I figured that was where > most of the spammers weregetting my e-mail address. That e-mail address is only for accessing e-mail. It wouldn't be readily available to web browsers so they couldn't "harvest" it, unless you actually typed it into web pages yourself. I have two "primary" e-mail addresses (both university) which I *refuse* to allow to be posted (unfortunately my one e-mail address was included in a list for a month before I caught it (I've forced them to take the whole list down... people can phone us if they really want to talk to us) and now I'm getting 1-2 419 scam spam per week (fortunately these scammers haven't sold the e-mails to a list yet)... each one gets an OS X Mail "Bounce" but unfortunately they don't use real reply-to addresses...). > Anybody got any suggestions as to a good firewall program, that works, > and is easy to maintain? A firewall would do you no good -- a firewall will merely protect your computer, or network, not an e-mail address. Changing e-mail addresses would be the *best* solution since everyone you know probably hasn't got used to your current e-mail address. Also, do *never* give out your primary e-mail address on-line (get a free service like Hotmail and use Outlook Express to access that account if you'd like an account to use publicly) and *never* use your primary e-mail address in a public forum (like Mac Canada). As for anti-spam software, check out the discussions at <http://www.macintouch.com/spam04.html> > Ideally I'd like to see the spam bounced back to the sender however that > may well be asking too much. OS X's Mail has that option and there are also a few AppleScript macros for Outlook Express and M$ Entourage that will do the same thing (though, the OS X Mail also has Postmaster as the responder's name). > Have thought of changing ISP's again including signon name, but asn oted > here earlier, > most ISP's are far too stupid in their thinking to be able to accomodate > the likes of us Macintosh users. It's not worth changing ISPs to change e-mail addresses. All ISPs will have some mechanism to allow you to change your e-mail address. Sympatico allows you five e-mail addys IIRC so you could simply keep this as your "junk" e-mail addy and make yourself a real one as well.
