I am trying to get a fax through to Elections Canada (from the UK) and my first attempt resulted only in a cover page being received. The "faxing" process took over 10 minutes for a 3 page document (IIRC a high-res fax is 1 page per min).
I sent a two page PDF file which was made up of two separate TIFFs, each individually saved into PDF format by GraphicConverter and then joined into one PDF by "Combine PDFs" and "printed" (i.e. faxed) by Preview.
Today I "printed" the two TIFFs separately to Fax with a cover page from GraphicConverter and each transmission seemed only to take roughly 2 mins at LOW resolution. I tried sending one at high resolution and got an error from the OS X Fax Monitor.
The text I saw in the Fax Monitor for the last two transmissions (at low res, 96 lpi) was (in this order):
Dialling Connected to 001613... No job faxing
I would've expected "Faxing" to appear between Connected to and No job faxing.
FYI This is what appeared in the to-be-faxed list whilst the document was being faxed:
Status Name Fax Number Faxing Name.tiff 0016139988393
I cannot confirm that the fax got through until tomorrow since they're closed today (though, I did receive a call from them yesterday morning).
In the meantime, I suspect one of the following as mucking up my fax:
1. Somehow the fax software didn't like the combined PDF
2. OS X can't handle high resolution faxes
3. Something is broken in OS X 10.3.4
4. Something is broken in *my* install of OS X 10.3.4
5. Elections Canada's fax machine doesn't like "high res" faxes (doubtful)
6. There's too much line noise on these [EMAIL PROTECTED]@$ British phone lines (it's also surprising how frequently calls are routed to random destinations by British Telecom and Sky. You try calling Toronto and end up talking to someone in Waterloo or Hanover and Mississauga (those are our confirmed screwups where we asked the stranger where we'd ended up calling). When you hit re-dial the call (sometimes) gets placed correctly (at first they tried blaming us, then their partner in Canada and then finally a technician told me that other BT subscribers had this problem calling other countries as well)
Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed it that it went through.
Eric.
