If you are looking to "hack" why not see if the 9500 board will fit into the 8600 case? Best of both worlds!

If im not mistaken the 8600 case has the space for a 9600 board (6 slots) I think the cases are identical except for the label. But since you have one you can obviously verify this.

Only thing would be the power supply. I pretty sure you can change the 8600/9600 boards and it works cause I think I used to have a 8600 with a 9600 in it.

Now are the 8600 and 8500 motherboards the same? I d say its very likely the exact same board in a new case with higher wattage power supply to power the possible extra drives. But maybe someone can verify this.

If it is the same board then it looks like your set.

I Have a 9600 with a g3/400 in it still. But im not running x on it so i cant help you there.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the suggestion of the newer machine Jean-Charles, but what I am looking to do is play with the toys... figure it out, hack it, make it work etc.. I consider myself a hobbyist.
I am looking to upgrade either the 9500 6 pci slots 12 ram slots but a B$%CH of a case. Or the 8600 which has the nice Beige style case, but only 3 pci and 8 ram.

Hi James,

I think you'll have some other answers from other macusers too.

As for the upgrade, you are on the top of the preG3 models so I'll go for a G3.
Hope this will help...
