I have had a similar problem with my iBook G4 with a '802.11g' Airport card. My wireless router is 802.11b (D-Link) and the other computers on the network (a Mac and a PC) have '802.11b' cards and they never lose the connection. The iBook G4, however, seems to lose the connection whenever it is idle for any period of time. Turning the Airport card off and then on again clears the problem quickly enough, but it's still a pain. I had always guessed it was an issue with the 'g' card running on a 'b' network. That's my experience, but I can't offer any solutions.
Turning the card off and on with my iBook does not clear the problem. But, this does sound very close. I too thought it was the g' card but I think it is also a combination with the newer iBooks because we have a PowerBook that never has this problem. Actually, I think it had it once. But, it is very rare.
