Leo Laporte, on Rogers Call For Help program, referred to this as a
pyramid scheme. Although you don't have to ante up any cash, your
success depends on you getting as many people as possible to use your
id as reference. The first people signed up are most likely to succeed,
and as the pyramid grows anyone signing up later is a lot less likely
to get the number of "sponsors". The other factor is your access to
exposure. Leo criticized hosts of another show for using their on air
presence to advance their own causes, while other people would be at a
disadvantage.
I guess using a mailing list for exposure would give you an advantage.
