Oh man.
SO I have the nice legit black-labelled full-retail generic Panther disks. And a nice 40G hard drive. And 192MG of RAM (a 128MB Kingston stick specifically for the iMac and a SEC 64MB stick).
I replace the original hard drive with the 40G one in the iMac. No problem. I put back on 8.6 and then 9.2. No problem. I put the Panther disk in and -- kernal panic screens and blackness and general weirdness and I can't even get the machine to read the first disk at all so I have no idea what's on it and, yeah, I made sure I had the latest firmware update and I partitioned the hard drive to put the OS's in the first 8G and I know that 192MB isn't all that fast but I just want to get OS X on this thing to lend it to someone who'll only ever use Word and surf the net and if she wants more memory she can fork over the $$ for it at a later date an everything should be working but isn't.
Ah... some researching ensues.
Probable cause: flakey RAM. Apparently the 333MHz machines are bad when it comes to OS X and certain RAM sticks. A few people in forums suggest it might be the Kingston stick. What do I know.
Except -- I need to switch and play with different 144-pin SO-DIMM PC100 or PC133 sticks to find the right combination.
But I *really* can't afford to upgrade this thing any more -- I've already forked over $$ for the hard drive and the Panther disks -- and this is my secondary machine. Friend can't afford to come up with $$ for sticks, either (let's just put it this way -- she'll be spending a lot of time writing up job resumes and cruising around looking for postings). And if I can't get OS X on the machine, it's resale value (such as it is) will plummet.
Anyone upgrade their tray-loader and had success putting on Panther? Care to say where you got your RAM or at least a brand name?
I just need to lessen the chances of another kernal panic attack 'cause, frankly, every time I have to go into the iMac I increase the chances I'll screw around with something and my anxiety level with this effort is already near the ceiling :-P
Suggestions?
