Thanks for your replies. I've found two free apps, Audacity 1.0.0 and
BladeEnc. Both are open source apps. Both run on OS 8.6.
Audacity 1.0.0 is an audio editor. Imports mp3, but exports aif and others...

but I'd love to have better than 200mghz and 80 ram :-)
