What about QuickTime? It does basic editing, if you've registered it. If you
want something more extensive, I used to use Peak. They used to have an LE
edition as well that handled most tasks.
I thought Audion also allowed for mp3 editing. The app has recently gone
freeware and there is a software kit that allows for <earlier> versions to
run on 8.6.

Thanks for your replies. I've found two free apps, Audacity 1.0.0 and
BladeEnc. Both are open source apps. Both run on OS 8.6.
Audacity 1.0.0 is an audio editor. Imports mp3, but exports aif and others...

Audacity got a great review and a bit of a how-to yesterday on Call for
Help, the tech tv show. Looks like a great app for just about
everything. They were using it to bring cassette recordings into digital
and mentioned that they will probably do some more on it. Glad to hear
it's for macs too, they didn't mention that.
