        Get a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), which is basically a
battery backup (typically 10-15 minutes) for your desktop. I like APC
branded ones, but there are a number of choices. Staples/Business Depot
sell a variety of choices. Mac OS X has rudimentary support for talking to
the UPS via USB, which shows up in the "Energy Saver" control pane  in
System Preferences.

        I always tell clients to get a UPS - it can save people quite a lot
of trouble, especially if there are little power outages in your area
occasionally. Most outages last only a few seconds, but that is enough to
ruin your day without a UPS.
