I was just pointing them out since they take the place of internal upgrades. Besides, you as a tower user, can just add the relevant PCI card ;-). > >XBoxes or PS2s are much cheaper and > > they actually are designed to take a pounding (unlike your $2000+ > > (new) piece of high-tech equipment that is a professional computer > > ;-)) > > Ah. I've been 'poor' (student) for more years than I can remember yet I upgraded every two or three years. Of course, I've never bought a new machine, and, each machine seems to cost me 1/3 - 1/2 less than the previous one while speeding up at least 50% (once I jumped 6x... from Quadra 700/33 to iMac 233 and, at $950 (1999) it cost me 1/3 of what the Quadra did in 1994 ($3100)). If I go for the Mac mini (as I think I will) I'll spend roughly 1/2 of what I paid for my _wonderful_ PowerBook G3/400 and get a machine that's 3-4 x faster for most operations (of course, I'll lose the nice thin, light LCD and have to go back to my 17" CRT :( :( :(. > I'm in Vancouver. Except, apparently, buyers are willing > to pay that. $1700 for a DP 867. Hahahahahaha. I recently saw one with some add'l hardware (Airport card, RAM and the likes) go for just a bit over $900 on http://ehmac.ca. This seller has a few extra toys ((cheap) 19" screen, extra drive space, extra optical drive) but these goodies add only an extra $100-150 to the price. Don't they realise that the Mac mini is *faster* for most operations than the DP 867 (except those that rely on multiprocessors or multithreading). Plus, to add insult to injury (s)he is "throwing in" illicit copies of software "for free". I find it so very tacky for people to do that -- do they not realise that (a) it's unethical, (b) illegal, and (c) people see right through it? > > At www.cpused.com (used Mac retailer in Toronto... usually quite > > expensive) you can get G4/450s DVD-ROM 256 MB RAM 30 GB drive for > > $400+tax, and, you even get a 90 day warrantee (store). > > I can't recall why at this point, but I'm determined not to get anything > less than 700 or 800MHz. I noticed a 900 MHz G3 for the B&W at PowerLogix (of course, you'd at least want to go G4 since a lot of apps require G4s now). > > I hope he is :-). > > You hope he's what? Going with the upgrade or splurging on the Mini? I think it was "I hope he is going to be happy" but I don't remember.
