System.dat and User.dat are the two files that are the Registry. After the image is expanded, it has larger clusters (more sectors per cluster). The files will use fewer of the larger clusters but "cluster waste" usually makes the file use a bit more space. The DA0 files are the backup copy that's made every time you boot up. For more insurance, make your own copy of the registry files. Win98 keeps several backups of the registry, but if you have a major problem develop with it and reboot about 4 or 5 times then the error will be in all the backup copies, so it's still a good idea to make your own backup of _good_ registry files. As a last ditch effort, the SYSTEM.1ST file in the root is a copy of system.dat made right after the initial installation and hardware detection. It's only useful if your hardware config hasn't had major changes since windows was installed. (So it's not likely to work well with the DOS card if you installed under VPC.) > The root dir has 21, "file00--.chk" files added, > maybe temp files from > the conversion? These total 168k-8k each. CHK files are stuff recovered by scandisk when you have a crash. Most of the time they're just junk fom the windows\temp folder. Unless you know what file(s) you were working on when it crashed, there's not a whole lot of usefulness in CHK files. About the only thing you can do is try changing the extention and attempt to open them. If you're extra-geeky you can try a text or hex editor and see if there's anything at the start of them to identify them. > I'm hopeful a fix using the system-profile before > file conversion might > be a work around Oh. Duh. I forgot about the hardware profiles. :) I use that on my Dell laptop for with and without the docking station. Yeah, you should be able to setup profiles for VPC and the DOS card then switch prrofiles before you quit one to go to the other. ===== http://www.junkscience.com "All the Junk that's fit to Debunk!" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
