Check you have the right file extension on them - or put an extension on the file if it doesnt have one. Try and open the file from the app that created it rather than just double clicking and hoping the mac will associate the filetype. Your ibook should happily read files created on the 8500. If they were burnt via pc - the mime type information would be lost - you just need to reassociate it.
