Print the config pages by pressing the test button to get the currently assigned IP. Start, Run and type telnet in there, then click OK. This brings up a telnet window. Enter set local_echo This is so you can see what you're typing, then enter open 192.168.0.142 Use your JetDirect's IP here, this is my LaserJet 4's internal JetDirect. Now hit Enter, then hit it again when you have the > prompt. Type ? and Enter to get the help list. Type / and Enter to see the current configuration. Type dhcp-config: 0 to disable DHCP. Type / and Enter to check the current config. There should be an IP address, the Host should be the PC's IP on the ethernet port the JetDirect is assigned to and the subnet mask will probably be 255.255.255.0 To save the changes you must type QUIT. Do not type EXIT as it will not save the changes. Don't dally around too long or the JetDirect will drop your telnet connection. It does that in order to not tie it up in case other people on the network might be wanting to send it print jobs. As long as you keep it busy, it won't drop the telnet connection. After you have DHCP off, you can go to the Printers and Faxes control panel (that's in XP, all other Windows versions it's just Printers) and click on the printer icon and hit Delete. DO NOT have windows remove the printer drivers if it asks! Now run the network printer install wizard again and you won't be having problems with the printer "going walkabout" again. ;) If you have more questions about configging the JetDirect via Telnet, just ask. :) It is easier with one of the newer ones with the built in web server interface or you could install the web server software for the older models like yours and use that to configure it, but that's PITA for a small setup because you can't do squat with it until you setup at least one print queue and have the printer installed. I tried that first because I thought using Telnet to reconfigure the server would be "hard". Ha! I found it quite easy and even did it the first time with local echo off so I couldn't see what I was typing, and I'm semi-dyslexic. ;) The reason the JetDirect defaults to DHCP enabled is because otherwise you'd have to change the IP range of at least one PC temporarily just to change the server's IP. With DHCP it grabs an IP from your LAN and you just need to print the config pages to find out what IP it has at that moment. With my LaserJet 4 I don't have to configure its JetDirect with Telnet because the server is in the printer's MIO slot and I can configure it via the printer's front panel display and controls. If I had an Ethernet JetDirect in the MIO slot of the DeskJet 1200C/PS, I'd have to use Telnet because that printer doesn't have a display, just blinking lights. ===== Say hello to Juror #49. Yep, I'm on jury duty until the end of March. Gotta call in each weekend. Fun. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool.
