The Maplins adaptor does allow a SVGA monitor to be physically connected, but if the Mac does not supply the necessary signal, then the monitor cuts out as a safety precuation. I think it is called MRPI compliance or something. I know this happens, because I tried it. There is a more expensive type of adaptor you can get which converts the signals.
