Thanks all for the suggestions regarding products to get rid of permanent
ink. I'll try and find some IPA now to give it a shot. I tried lighter fluid
(Swan) but wasn't impressed with the results in spite of a lot of elbow
grease.

There is one thing I have in reserve that we call 'trichlo' in France, which
I always buy when over there as it is not sold to the public in this
country, at least, not through the supermarkets and chemists. It's very
strong stuff that will eat at the plastic if left on it for too long.
However, nothing resists it and it will shift dirt and yellowing. But I'd
rather try gentler products first.

Unfortunately, 7.1 cannot be downloaded from Apple's web or ftp site. I
don't know why they give away 6.0, 7.0 and 7.5 but not 7.1.

Anyway, I've managed to install 7.1 on the LCIII.

I remembered that I had another set of original 7.1 disks that came with my
Duo 230. Booting with Disk Tools worked fine so I wiped the drive clean and
copied the mini system folder to the HD so I could reboot from it. Then, I
made a copy of InstallMeFirst and replaced Enabler 201 with Enabler 003. I
started the installer on InstallMeFirst and everything went fine, until the
end when the installation routine asks for InstallMeFirst again. Here, it
complained that the InstallMeFirst disk I put in the floppy drive wasn't the
proper one. That's when I realised that the install routine was looking for
Enabler 201. Sure enough, when I inserted the InstallMeFirst from my Duo 230
set, the install process completed. The one thing I had to do was to reboot
from a floppy and copy System Enabler 003 to the System folder again and
delete System Enabler 201. The reboot after that was successful and I was
able then to apply Update 3.0.

It was convoluted but definitely worth it. On the LCIII 80 Mb drive, System
7.1 only takes 11 Mb or so, and with no third party inits installed, only
takes 1.5 Mb with 32-bit memory on. Definitely enough to run apps without
having recourse to VM.

I have an original set of RAM and Speed Doubler 2 which are perfect for
System 7.1 to 7.6. The memory requirement is nowhere near the same as
version 8 which was released after 2.

> Finally, does the LC III definitely use 72 pin Simms?

Yes, it does. The white slot is for a 72-pin fast page RAM module.
