It seems that the copy-protection on some of the new releases from Sony can result in:
*the Mac will not recognise the CD *your Mac will not boot - all you get is a grey screen *the CD may damage the firmware, requiring an expensive trip to a service engineer... This can be a serious problem if you have a Mac with a built-in optical drive without a manual eject hole (normally found on the right hand side of the CD slot) The audio CDs in question do not conform to standard CD format, and are not marked with the usual CD logo. In place of this there should be a message "will not play on PC/Mac". There is an Apple kbase article on this at<http://kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/kbase.woa/wa/query?searchM ode=Assisted&type=id&val=KC.106882> In my opinion, it would be a good idea to avoid such 'copy-protected' audio CDs altogether. If you decide to risk inserting one of these disks, there is a very simple workaround that can be found at <http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20020520/tc_nm/medi a_cd_piracy_dc_1> --Mike Gingold -- Mac UK is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Mac UK list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/mac-uk.html> Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-uk%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Macintosh?
