Should luxury ever extend far enough, Sonnet Technologies do a G4/800 card for PCI PowerMacs. Not a patch on a real G4/800 (limited by bus speed and ancient achitecture, not to mention slow and tempreamental RAM) but it's a pretty cool hot-rod mod for a 9500 :). I have a 7300 lurking under my desk that used to be a server. It keeps locking up solid in OS X 10.1.5 Server and I can't work out why. As it is I may well sell it and shift the server functions onto my G3/400 as my new PC is rapidly taking over as a desktop workstation and I only have 1 monitor. On the other hand if I bought a 15" DVI flat panel I could use my G3 on my other desk :). I digress.... Anyway. The 9500 is easily upgradable and these days a G3 card costs very little if you go for an older one (233-333MHz). That will easily cope with 9.1 and a few apps (don't expect miracles though, it's not as fast as an equivalent speed new-world machine). I would also recommend you find a Rage128 PCI card for it. They are pretty easy to fall over these days as G3 B&W and Yikes G4 owners are increasingly moving over to Radeon 7000 ME cards to try and squeeze a few extra seconds out of their OS X performance, and use Quartz Extreme. If you are going strictly OS 9 only you might also try a Voodoo3 or Voodoo4 PCI card, both of which are cheap as chips and easily converted from PC to Mac versions. I have an 840av on my desk hooked up to an old VCR. I use it to watch TV on the rare occasions I do watch TV (mostly footy). It's a nice machine and has about 70 worth of 9GB 10,000rpm hard disk in (which is somewhat wasted hooked to a NuBus Jackhammer!!). It's nice enough to use as it is in OS 8.1. If you don't expect earth moving performance from it you can use if for most basic everyday things. Go have a look around eBay and see what you can pick up. -- Mark Benson http://homepage.mac.com/markbenson -- Mac UK is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Mac UK list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/mac-uk.shtml> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-uk%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
