Wall Street power adaptor / battery problem

Please can anyone help with a panic we have with our PowerBook G3.  For 
some time the charging adaptor has been overheating and cutting out and 
not charging the PB. Now it has stopped altogether and we cannot get 
into the PB as a result, and we desperately need to. Furthermore, 
plumbing it in and trying to run it from the adaptor on bypass does not 
work. It just ran flat.

The adaptor is the M-5159 three pin type, so it is not part of the 
Apple recall.

I don't think it is the battery at fault as we have two and neither is 
charging.  i would be very grateful if anyone can shed light on what is 
going on.
