If the adapter is overheating and cutting out, you have a problem.

I have never seen this behaviour at all, I didn't even know there was a
thermal cut out on Powerbook mains adapters.

Suggests that the battery was dead and causing a problem to me or a bad
board in the Powerbook.

What machine is this ?

Have you tried resetting the Power Manager.

Contact me off list if you wish I have spares for some G3 and replacement
adapters.
