It had crashed, and after fixing various problems, I found all the desktop folders there but empty. Norton Undelete found and restored the files. By using the Mac you decrease the chances of restoring any files, as they can be overwritten. When restoring you also need to copy to an external drive, in your case either SCSI or a network drive. If you don't, you could restore the files over the top of deleted files awaiting restoration ruining any chances of getting them back.
