The main reservation I would have with advocating VMSB to you is that it is
not truely Object based in the way that VB is. It has properties, but you
have to call subroutines to set them, so it's a really weird hybrid. Also
the company were ranting on about upgrading it in 2001 and it's still
exactly as it was when I purchased it.

It was given away free on PC Pro - this is the Intel/Windows version. The
Mac version I'm not sure about - thought he PC version does create Mac
software.

Again - was free on the cover of a PC magazine. Agin, dunno about a Mac
version.

There was a version of Smalltalk a while back, maybe that is of interest? I
did an awful lot of research on this matter in 2001 when I got my first Mac.
There is a real lack of good free/low priced development environments on the
Mac. Have you considered Java? That may be a posibility.
