IF this is a relatively new drive, it will probably not be supported by the
built-in CD burning infrastructure in MacOS 9. You will need to use an
earlier drive that is supported. I am surprised that Toast 5.2.3 doesnt see
the drive, though, as it should support all drives that conform to the MMC
standard, which is basically all drives produced over the past few years.

The built-in MacOS 9 support only works with specific drives, however. It is
possible to hack the support files to work with non-supported drives see
xlr8your mac for some details of this (try starting at
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/itunes/itunes_disk_burn.html). You will
need to find out what drive is inside the Iomega enclosure the best way is
via Apple System Profiler, where you should be able to see the drive ID
string. You will need this to hack the Authoring Support file.

Its not a trivial subjecty, but I hope my tips above point you in the right
direction. As always, MacOS 9 is falling further and further behind in terms
of support for newer hardware, so Im afraid this is just one of the
symptoms of this.

Its not quite as simple as this, however - Apple could have just used the
MMC information to decide how to support drives. Instead they used a
mechanism that limits support to certain drives, which is what is causing
the problem here...

Subject: Iomega CD-RW 52x24x52 External Drive not being seen

I just connected an Iomega 52x24x52 External CD-RW drive (model 32650) via
USB-1 to my Lombard Powerbook running OS 9.2.2, and Toast 5.2.3 & Jam 2.6.2
don't "see" the drive even though Iomega's HotBurn does. My previous Iomega
external drive (Predator) worked fine, so is there any "hack", "trick" or
"support
file" needed to get Toast & Jam to recognize and see this new drive? Thank
you.
Kevin.
