Surprisingly in light of what youve said, my experience has always been
really excellent with Seagate drives I have supplied many many to my
clients over the years and amazingly I have yet to hear of a single failure.
I have also had good experiences with Western Digital (although I havent
supplied anything like as many of these), but by comparison two suppliers I
cant recommend are IBM (now Hitachi) and Maxtor (not as bad as IBM were,
but I have still seen a few failures).

Any more experiences from other people to add to the data?

One key point is that longevity of drives is very much affected by how hot
they get. For example, although it is possible to mount four drives in the
base of a G4 Power Macintosh, I wouldnt personally recommend it with most
drives because of the heat problem. There are some drives that run very hot
(particularly the 10k or 15 rpm drives, of course), and these you would
particularly want to avoid in that situation. Also some external FireWire
enclosures dont have very good cooling, and again you should be careful
about which drives you mount in these.

Seagate IDE drives are pretty bad too - I had a 2GB and a 10GB die on me
with in 2 years of each other.
