Whenever my iBook travels, I just close the lid and put it into the bag, then open it up on the train or wherever and I'm straight back to where I left off. I think it's fine to travel with them sleeping rather than shutdown - the hard drive is parked, and it's just supplying enough power to keep the RAM refreshed. It's a feature I've always loved compared to 'hibernating' PCs.
