I leave my PowerBook on sleep during the day, when I want to use it, but, as with my iMac, I use MacJanitor before powering down at night, when I want to charge it. It seems wasteful to use power while charging!

Well, true but you have to decide for yourself where to draw the line. We could all save energy in countless ways, even to the extent of turning the computers off every time we left the room or only ever having cold showers. It's wasteful if - like leaving your TV on stand-by at night - it serves no useful purpose. There are benefits in not turning computers off and given the low levels of consumption involved (for a Powerbook it's something like two or three watts/hour, not that much more for desktops) I'd opt for convenience.
