Thanks for your thorough and comprehensive answer. Unfortunately having the proxy settings for the BT Sat gateway address in the computer does not improve the performance though it does seem to change the "character" of the loading of pages. Without the proxy setting it is still for long periods and then jumps into life while with the proxy settings it seems to be more progressive but both take ages. I did wonder about putting the router address in instead of the BT Gateway address. I suppose I can experiment....
I don't know if you are familiar with the specific router I have but it has a number of setting options which I find very perplexing. I can send you information direct if I might be allowed to pick your brains further....
Though I am sure there was someone here who owns this very router as it was on the strength of their recommendation (and the amazonly low price) that I got it. They may have already been where I am.....
