The Firewire ports on my iMac DV SE (bought new but not tried with a Firewire device till too late) never worked. Until I stuck a new HD in! For about ten minutes the LaCie back-up drive showed up. Then the LaCie died - it won't work on the G3 Pismo that had previously dealt with it fine - and System Profiler showed nothing connected again in the the Firewire ports. Since then I've been searching for help and tips. I came up with this helpful link:

Apart from not getting the Open Firmware keys correct (should be command-option-O-F), this has allowed me to get the Firewire up and running again but only for iPod. Attach a CD burner and it says the disk is not readable by OS X. Then the ports die again and although the iPod is seen in system profiler (as is the CD burner) nothing shows up anywhere. The randomness of all this is maddening!
