Not actually tried, but aware of. I've thought about it, but it seems to half defeat the object of getting a Mac to then run exactly what I run on x86. Being able to is handy if theres a Mac box spare to do a job, but most of my x86 hardware is higher spec that the old Macs I have. I did get hold of a full 040 to go in one of my boxes and try the 68k Linux, but not really done anything with it! I'm a Debian user though, so if I do want to play they probably support the widest range of architectures of any Linux distribution. > There is also Darwin which is strictly CMI and allows you to decide on the > window manager as well (if you want). > > Darwin can even run on ix86 platform (granted it works on limited hardware > and generally only on AMD and VIA chipsets but still...) > > There are a number of ports and open source projects available for porting > Linux/GNU/KDE/Gnome/Unix apps and utils over to Darwin... Read a little bit about Darwin and the x86 port, but again, apart from curiosity it doesn't gain much, and unfortunately I don't have enough time for curiosity - otherwise my old Acorn RiscPC and Amigas would be networked and I'd have fired up my old BBC Master to see if my LVD drive and Doomsday discs work or not! > But of course nothing beats a great GUI *and* a capability to run CMI with > or without X window system like OS X. You threw me for a bit there with 'CMI'! Just looked it up and realised it's something I use without thinking about it. In fact it probably demonstrates part of my culture shock in moving to the Mac. The one button mouse scares me a bit, but having read about the CMI features in OS X I'm not so worried. I'm somebody who finds a Windows 2 button mouse limiting as I'm used to 3 buttons with either Enlightenmnet or XFCE4 on my Linux boxes. > You could just start in single user mode (granted with root rights at first) > and never have to see a GUI with X... > > Everything you mention that you like to use in Linux has been ported > AFAIK...at least insofar that with Fink you would have them if not > otherwise... Looking forward to trying out some of my familiar apps under OS X when I can. I believe GIMP has been ported which I use quite a bit, and as you say so has OOo and a Mozilla based browser and others - hopefully an SSH client similar to Putty is kicking around somewhere. ** end quote [RP McKay] -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ -- Mac UK is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Mac UK list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/mac-uk.shtml> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-uk%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
