OK, I'm no expert in this field, but since you say 'clonk' and not 'grind' that sounds like the actuator arm hitting the end stop because it can't work out where it is on the disk platter. It is a long while since I worked in HD testing though, so technology has moved on quite a bit (back then we were still testing field replacement 20M drives that had weight warnings on them, and a 4G SCSI drive was big!). If you value the data then getting it checked out is worth doing - but it depends on the monetary value you put on it. I've not used any companies myself, but I do know of a well priced on locally to me (Portsmouth) and they have the same background in the IBM HD manufacturing plant as I do, so if I need any data recovery I'd be talking to them (I did in fact, but haven't actually gone ahead and recovered the data yet, or decided whether to gamble my experience on a circuit board change!).
