Yes, I know Appletalk is there, but can it be used for printing? From what you say it might be possible. Certainly it doesn't work over a serial connection like it used to in OS9, that might be the source of my confusion.As far as I know OSX printing has never been able to use Appletalk.Yes there is support in OSX for Apple Talk

The printer is not a postscript printer and there is no RIP being used.It doesn't have to be a postscript printer, that's the point of a software RIP, proper postscript printers have hardware a RIP built in.

I'm not sure that everything you print goes through the postscript RIP in CUPS, but certainly some things do.

Yup it has a USB plug socket and a card slot where the Ethernet card / server goes and which is the means by which it is connected, via a switch.So why not use USB? Are there no drivers? You just want the printer on the network?
Also are there any configuration utilities for the ethernet card/server? Presumably you must at least be able to set an IP for the device.
But now I'm feeling lost, and I deleted your original mail. As I understand it your question was about printing via Appletalk. But why are you so desperate to do that?
