There are more thorough details on the sourceforge website but this is a taster from the forum there:
My main effort so far has been to try using AppleTalk, but the printer refuses
to appear in the list. (There is, by the way, another Ethernet printer connected
which is works AOK over AppleTalk.)

I have followed the "AppleTalk" instructions as described in the FAQ, but they
are outdated: there is no such thing as the Print Center in OS 10.3.6. (The
printer shows up just fine under "atlookup" in the Terminal, so the G5 appears
to be recognizing it.)"

It was a month ago that I did this and its kinda sketchie.

I installed the newest gimp print (not the beta)

I ran EpsonNet MacAssist
2 utilities which set up an Epson print driver for Macintosh. One is for OS 9.X and the other is for OS X.
The easiest way to find them is to go to epson.com --> support and search support only for macassist. The result should be 2 files, Epson Net Mac Assist printer Server Set up Utility v2,for OS 9, and MacAssist v4 and WebAssist Utility v4 for OS X. WebAssist is a HTML GUI which allows you to configure the "Print Server" MacAssist creates.

Durring the set up you will be asked for a username and password. leave them blank and hit return. (as in [TAB], [TAB], [return] )and you will get in. Once "in" I reset my password to a top secret gotta kill ya if I tell ya kinda one. No it wasn't "letmein" ;-). gave it an unique IP address such as 192.168.1.4
and what ever sub net mask your lan is set up for.like 255.255.255.0 the subnet I use for my lan.

The print center is located in Applications-->Utilities-->Printer Setup Utility

Click on the "ADD" icon
The only "Printer Type" setting that would work for me was "LPD/LPR"
I used IP Printing but there is an Apple Talk item available.
Using IP printing I gave it the same IP address I used in the mac assist program

Use the print server name MacAssist was calling your printer as the que name

For Printer Models go find the epson color stylus 1520 in the list of printers.

You should be done

when ever you want to change the settings on the print server go to a browser and enter the IP Address you used for the printer and the netassist will come up with all your settings.

to get the printer to print all of its settings push the very small button on the printers ethernet card until it starts printing if the little LEDs on the printers ethernet card are blinking or just red is showing unplug it and wait a few seconds to reset it

I hope this helps

Its late I should have been in bed a while ago. Let me know if you need more help

The printer is not a postscript printer and there is no RIP being used.It doesn't have to be a postscript printer, that's the point of a software RIP, proper postscript printers have hardware a RIP built in.
Are you saying the GIMP is a software PS rip? I thought it was just a generic language which can work with or without. The AppleTalk driver which went up to OS9 and stopped just fed the information straight through in short order and the quality of output was pretty damn good for photos, with the well known shortfall relating to the pigment inks. The GIMP gives me lots of layout errors and printing quality is mediocre at best.
The web page says that for OS10.3 you don't need GhostScript,Yes, Apple licensed CUPS ( http://www.cups.org/ ), which includes ESP-ghostscript, gimp-print adds high quality print drivers to CUPS.
I'm not sure that everything you print goes through the postscript RIP in CUPS, but certainly some things do.
Is it because the OS installs it anywaySo yes, it's an integral part of OS X 10.3
So if II run the Ghost Script remover I will mess up the OS I presume? Hopefully the GS that was originally in there has been overwritten but I wish I knew for certain. I miss the transparency of OS9 in situations like this.
Yup it has a USB plug socket and a card slot where the Ethernet card / server goes and which is the means by which it is connected, via a switch. So why not use USB? Are there no drivers? You just want the printer on the network?
Also are there any configuration utilities for the ethernet card/server? Presumably you must at least be able to set an IP for the device.
It is set up as an IP device but is prone to output problems and is very very very slow. So slow it takes masses of processing space / time and it took me a whole day last week to print two dozen A1 line drawings ( 4 off 6).
But now I'm feeling lost, and I deleted your original mail. As I understand it your question was about printing via Appletalk. But why are you so desperate to do that?
The question was regarding whether I risk losing the printer when I upgrade GIMP as it was very difficult to set up and consumed a lot of time which I don't really have to spare at the moment. I think I will bite a bullet and go for it anyway. I curse Epson for telling me they were producing an OSX driver for this printer just before I bought it. When I had for a few weeks they said it was still in production and then after a few months they said they were only going to do a driver for the 7600! There is iProof X which is supposed to work and work with AppleTalk but I have not heard of anyone using it with the 7500 as yet, so am cautious about buying it just now.
Thanks for your input and I hope this is not too tedious reading for everyone else.
