It was late 85 or 86 can't be sure. My daughter was born on the 12th
and Chernobyl was very much in the news shortly after that. I was 30
and working in the Edinburgh New Town and one of the guys on the top
floor brought in this amazing little box with a 9" screen and he was
very excited. Some of us were too. It was completely new, even for most
of us who did not know anything about using a computer. There were two
CAD stations in the building and we were allowed to look over the
shoulder of the chap who operated it (UNIX and I think the very very
very early days of ArchiCAD as I recall - Sun computers at �25k a
seat!) but we were not allowed to touch! The height of technology we
were allowed to play with was a device we could screw a Rotring into
and we could type in notes and it would write them on the drawing. You
could store notes but it was not too clued up on giving the pen a good
shake every few seconds and had no idea how to put the cap on and throw
it at the wall. Then there was a fuzzy period when the IBM clones
broke out like rash all over the place and Macs disappeared until I
bought my IIvi about 5 years later for something like �1200! We have
been solely Mac based ever since. The office I was working in is
largely Mac based now too.
