I run freeBSD on a 233MHz PII as my backup, mail and web server. It's networked 
in with 2 Macs running 10.2.8 and !0.3.9 respectively. There are no problems 
with it all working together (I only access the server over ssh). If you do 
decide to go with some flavour of Linux, make sure that you get a newer version 
than 2000 --- a number of fairly dangerous security holes have been found since 
then.
