I tried importing it into
Sound Studio and it was not that happy about it

if you're using Sound Studio 211_b3, or earlier, go to the File Menu and scroll down to "Open with QuickTime"... Sound Studio 22 (currently at beta 5) should open it directly.

otoh, for working directly with mp3s, I've had great success with MP3 Trimmer

...just break the file down to appox. 30 minute sections (or smaller) to keep your later editing in AIFF (if necessary) to manageable levels.

alternately, and maybe not acceptible for your purposes, you could burn an mp3 CD in iTunes.
