Nah. This happens whenever I try to use the headset, even switching over to the
headset in the sound preferences (for music for instance) doesn't actually make
sound come out of them - I have to mute and unmute before sound arrives.

I leave mine plugged in all the time - might also be connected...
Also you don't have to set it as
the audio device in System Preferences to use it with Skype,
I know *that*. And have done so many moons ago. The point is that it doesn't
work until the device is muted and unmuted in system prefs - I could maybe do
that in Skype's audio setup too, but I have to do it in System prefs for
everything else, so I might as well do it where I'm used to doing it.
I did just have a thought though - I believe many USB peripherals can be put to
sleep to save energy if they're idle - maybe that's the root cause of my
problem. I'll have to experiment with plugging the headset in when I want to use
it and not leaving it there all the time...
