I would just say that I prefer the keyboard of my Wallstreet G3 PowerBook to that of my husband's 600MHz white iBook; I find it much nicer to the touch and, as a touch-typist, easier to type on. If I'd had the cash, I'd have gone for a Lombard or Pismo, with the faster processor and built-in USB and FireWire.
Regards
Susan

Hi Folks,

I'm still a relative newbie to the mac platform though I've been a PC and Unix user since the days before PCs. I've got an old 4400 and some bits of iMacs that I swear one day I'll assemble into a working machine but I spend any
"quality time" with a mac fiddling rather than using.

What do you mean?? Fiddling *is* quality time ;o)

However, I'm seriously thinking about getting my wife a proper, working, 2nd hand laptop for Christmas and could use your advice. As you'll see from the above paragraph, budget is really tight, that's why I have bits of iMacs and
not marvellous, fully functional iMacs.

I have recently got my paws on a Rev. 1 White iBook 500MHz (the 8MB Rage 128 variant) and it's a darling. It's so nice to work on, looks cute without being outlandishly silly colours, and runs all versions of OS X. Around £275-300 is the going rate for an original iBook G3/500 in good condition.

Be very careful with later revision White G3 iBooks - a lot of them suffer logic board traumas. There is a replacement scheme but it doesn't exhaustively cover absolutely all models affected. Caveat Emptor.

Pismo and Lombard powerbooks re also nice but pricey and not performance wise any better than the iBook. I looked at a Pismo and went for an iBook instead.
