I'm working up a revised home page for Low End Mac. Right now I'm working on the page structure. Next comes a new, simplified logo to replace the Mac Plus and site name in bright yellow Bodega Sans Bold. Here's a rough draft:
<http://lowendmac.com/index2003.html> The biggest problem I'm running into is that half the browsers on my Mac render the page one way, half another. For instance, in the two gray bars with links, there's no additional line of space below the links in IE and Mozilla, but there is in iCab and Safari. Ditto for the SPONSORS and NAVIGATION links on the left and right side of the page. I once tried fixing this by defining how many pixels could appear below a certain type of text, but that made the site completely unusable in Netscape 4. (I know, it's ancient and outdated and noncompliant, but enough low-end Mac users use it that I hear when there's an incompatibility.) I don't want to do any browser sniffing. I want to find a way to define things so that they are displayed consistently across platforms -- and I think IE is the one that gets it "right" in this instance. We use a external style sheet on Low End Mac, so once we find a fix that works, it will be easy to implement it globally. I'm looking for help in creating a style sheet that eliminates the unwanted line of space after certain elements. And if you have any comments on how we might improve the navigation system of Low End Mac, I'm all ears. This thing has just grown and evolved and transformed and morphed since April 1997, and I can't see it with anything close to fresh eyes.
