Later versions are much more under your control. The only problem could be
superfluous linebreaks but even that can be changed in the preferences if
you take some time to edit those.

Like Michael I really like the integration between DW and BBEdit. I do most
of the rough layout in DW and then switch to BBEdit. All the users I
support use only DW.

It's a pretty deep program and I would highly recommend it for starters,
though I must say that I think you would be better off getting either MX or
MX2004. Any earlier version is just working with outdated technology. Be
aware however that using a  certain technology doesn't necessarily mean
you'll instantly become a great webdesigner. Creativity is in the mind, not
in the tools.
