Not too sure on the OCR for text, but for scanning photos from printed material make 
sure you scan at a high resolution, larger size, that you will need in the end. The 
reason is that printed material will have a dot pattern that may not be readily 
recognizable by the eye but very blatent when scanned. Scan large, then apply a slight 
gausian blur (really slight), then reduce to the size you want. With out doing this 
often times you will see a morray pattern caused by the dot pattern. I have found this 
way to produce nice images.
