Hi Ariel,

If you can come up with a full design spec (and potentially the code too, or even just a prototype), then a full revamp for the toolbars to make them more mac like is going to be a great thing.

The problem at the moment for the developers, is that we know that it needs to change, however we don't know what we want it to look like. If there is the goal of make them look like x, then it is a lot easier. Another reason for developers not working on this just now, is that currently it is a low priority item.

Hi James,
I did sign the JCA a while ago, and my name is on the list. Here is the URL of the example picture comparison: http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5373/thunderbirdpagesooojd2.png . I'm facing a bit of an issue with making the icons. Basically, in order for OpenOffice.org to fit into the Mac theme, the toolbar setup would have to be modified. I want most of the buttons to fit in at a 1 : 0.75 ratio within a rectangle which appears to be glass- like and gets darker (without the background changing color) with a mouse-over or click. However, with the 16 px and 32 px small and large size icons, and backgrounds dimming instead of icons with a mouse-over, I don't know if this is realistic without a reformat of the way buttons are displayed. It would also further the professional appearance to the program if drop down menus for certain buttons and text options could be made to look like the other buttons, but simply making an icon set won't do this. Finally, as is the case in iWork, it may be beneficial to have certain types of buttons appear in a different toolbar with a different icon size and set of rules, because it wouldn't make sense for all buttons to have the same look (like there is no need for a search feature or new document option to have the same icon design rules apply as for a bold/italic/underline set) because they have different levels of importance/use. Perhaps this can play into the reduction of the basic icon set discussed at ooocon, perhaps a dramatic revamp (at least in the Mac version) of the entire toolbar design is in order. But until that happens, I'm not sure how I would be able to really make this fit into the professional Mac-style by simply making new individual icons for a new icon set.
Let me know your thoughts,
Ariel

Shaun already mentioned that the icons must be LGPL, but you must also
sign a Joint Copywrite Agreement (JCA) with Sun before your code can
be incorporated within the OpenOffice.org project as your work MAY be incorporated into the commercial StarOffice.org product. After the JCA is signed and Sun receives and finalizes it, your code (and icons) can be added to the OpenOffice.org project. It is suggested that you open an issue at the Issue Tracker and upload your icons there. The mailing list can and will strip off attachements for safety and for sanity. Remember there are folks on this list that receive it via Satellite Phone and pay by the minute as well (and the costs
are upwards of a Eurodollar/minute.)
Lastly, thank you for your efforts and I look forward to examining your
icons.
