Are you using Panther (10.3) or Tiger (10.4)? I've used OOfice on 10.4, and according to the OO download page, it works with 10.3. In either case, you'll need to download the X11 window software to run OOffice. It's not very complicated. The info you need is here: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html
