But you _are_ using a special trick: Fink. Somebody else might be
using another special trick: MacPorts. Yet other people may be using
their custom special tricks. MacFUSE is also installed as part of the
latest Parallels product, which uses it. During WWDC, I met several
people who are working on products based on MacFUSE Core. Now, think
of what I said about the kernel being a single global shared namespace
with kernel extensions from multiple sources "competing" for it--
competing from the standpoint of a single developer/support person:
me. The more time I have to spend on issues and distractions that
could be potentially avoided, the less time I have to make MacFUSE
Core better. If MacFUSE Core sucks, any and all products that run atop
it will suck.

There is a possibility of us releasing MacFUSE Core with a built-in
updater, so you install it once, in a "standard" location, and forget
about it--it'll update itself when necessary. Other things that build
on top of MacFUSE can be packaged/released in arbitrary ways by
anybody, but they will have a standard way to check for the existence
of MacFUSE Core.

Even in the absence of a built-in updater, a few-line script could
update things automatically.

What works for you will not work for many others. This isn't about
solving one person's problems--this is about doing things in a way
such that everybody who develops on or uses MacFUSE benefits
optimally.
