I'm on Leopard.

It seems that passing '-onobrowse' gives the desired behavior.

  encfs -f --ondemand --idle=5 --extpass=~/getpass ~/.crypt-raw ~/crypt --
-onobrowse

Okay, but please understand the term "brief" is ambiguous in this context.
 One is left with the question of whether brief applies to the descriptions
of the options or the list of options themselves.  Hence my willingness to
guess at options which /may/ be available, such as 'noautoopen' which is
from a standard Mac OS X tool dealing with similar concepts... not far
fetched or "magical" at all.  And in my defense the document itself says:

   - MacFUSE has other options besides the ones listed here. I've listed
   the ones that I feel would be useful to most users.


I suppose I could study the source, as you and others have suggested, but
I'm glad that is not the common answer from other software engineers for
other user level features in software.
