SpotlightFS has *always* been unsupported. I marked the downloadable binary deprecated because looks like it doesn't work with Leopard 10.5.3. I'm afraid I don't have time to maintain everything.
Everything on this site, including SpotlightFS, is open source though. You asked if there is any way to debug--well, there's your answer.
