There is NTFS-3G, fuse-ext2, sshfs, MacFusion...
Also, both VMware and Parallels install and make use of MacFUSE if I
remember correctly.

I agree. If it doesn't disturb the user, there's no point in removing
it. It doesn't do anything when it's not in use.
