Thanks, Graham.  I've seen the FAQ (I assume you mean Q4.5) and Amit's
options page for allow_root.  In fact, adding -oallow_root resolves
the issue but is quite unsatisfactory from a security standpoint (not
a new concern, to be sure).  The reason I posted here is because the
behavior recently changed.  On MacFuse 1.7.1/Leopard 1.5.8 spotlight
had no trouble indexing the volume without the -oallow_root option, so
I figured this may be a new issue with the way that root interacts
with MacFuse.
