Hi Graham,

I upgraded from 2.0.3 (beta) to 2.1.5 (beta) and it doesn't seem to
have broken anything, but it didn't help either. The only options I
am using are non-encfs ones: -ovolname=kenenc -oauto_xattr -
oallow_root

It still can't recognize the directory without -oallow_root, and
disabling -oauto_xattr would cause problems with my encfs filesystem
(I believe).

Now that you mention it, there is no .spotlight-v100 file. There
wasn't with 2.0.3 either (but it did exist for 1.7.1). I tried every
combo of mdutil and -s, -E, -i on/off, adding/removing the mount point
from spotlight/privacy in Preferences, etc. It says that the volume
is indexed, but no spotlight dir appears. Maybe this is because it
thinks it is a plain old directory instead of a mount? I'm not using -
olocal so this shouldn't be the case. And a drive icon does appear on
the desktop. Also, it doesn't seem to index the mounted dir as part
of the main spotlight volume as it would were it just another
directory.

I tried your mdimport suggestion (without sudo). It chugs for a
(long) while, produces a bunch of errors (which I suspect are normal
because it is processing a very large number of files, some of which
are bound to be problematic) and then exits. No .spotlight directory
appears or anything else. Is it supposed to? The man page just says
it is for testing plugins, so maybe it does a dry run? Does this
result mean anything to you?

The last few lines it dumps are

Incorrect start/end range ordering; fixing.
Incorrect start/end range ordering; fixing.
failed to find start of cross-reference table.
failed to find start of cross-reference table.
failed to find start of cross-reference table.

and a complaint about some omni-outliner file -- but nothing else.

Thanks for all your help with this, Graham.

Cheers,
Ken
