I work for a company that shepherds open-source software and has for 10+ years. Most of what we [co-]maintain or develop uses a BSD-ish license, so there is zero obligation from people to contribute anything back. Our sales manager has gotten pretty good and concisely describing the tangible benefits of doing so. If you like, I can dig through email and pull up some stuff, or even ask him directly for a quick litany of reasons.
