Here is a guess, which could be wrong:
. 'trash' simply removes the reference to the file for the operating 
system (OS), and also tells the OS that the physical space on the disk 
is available for writing. The actual contents are not removed - they 
only become invisible to the OS. So... someone with a recovery 
application would have a chance at piecing the info back together, 
again.

. 'secure delete' does what 'trash' does, but it also overwrites the 
file multiple times with random data to make data recovery hard to do.
