Hi Everyone,

It turns out that my G4 MDD built-in speaker was blown.

I'm not sure what caused it, as I don't listen to loud, heavy-metal
band music. (Apologies to all you heavy-metal fans out there...smile)

Here is the posting I put on the Apple Discussions Site if you're
interested in how it got fixed...or encounter the same problem
yourself.

I had a problem with the built-in speaker on my G4 MDD.

I hadn't played any loud music on it, etc. but after making a funny
noise, the sound could hardly be heard at all. And, what I could hear
was faint and tinny. I checked all the software I could think of that
had sound controls, but found nothing that could be causing it.

That's when I realized the built-in speaker was blown. I researched
Apple's knowledge base and discussions and found nothing specific about
this particular problem and nothing in their parts replacement page for
the G4 MDD. (Perhaps the info was there and I just missed it.)

Anyway, I opened up the case and copied down the part number ZH736 (or
2H736, it was hard to tell) from the speaker module. Then I researched
third parties on the Internet and found one neat company called
http://www.welovemacs.com/ They ordered the part for me ($86 total),
which I suspect they got from Apple. Also, probably I could have bought
it from Apple directly and maybe saved money if I had called their
customer service department.

The part arrived (I wanted a new part, by the way, not a pull.), and I
installed it guided by instructions found for other parts on this page
on the Apple Web site
  http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/index.html

Hope this helps anyone who might encounter the same problem.
Jane
